Question 161

By: Robert Serreyn

Question? Please give some insight on Matthew 5:29-30?

(Matthew 5:29,30) And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. (30) And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Answer:

This portion of scripture has been troublesome for some BECAUSE both verses at the end says to be CAST INTO HELL.

AS I have said time and time again, ONCE SAVED a person CANNOT LOSE their salvation NO MATTER WHAT.

(Ephesians 1:13) In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.

I also have mentioned before ALWAYS check to see WHO or WHAT the portion of scripture is speaking to or about, In this case Matthew 5:29,30 Jesus is speaking to his disciples (The Who) and the subject is on about adultery (The What) and what NEEDS to be done to prevent from committing it.

To answer these two verse the application is simply symbolic…

V29 – “If thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out”

V30 – “If thy right hand offend thee, cut it off”

What Jesus was saying SYMBOLICALY if your EYE is causing you to sin (lust) (V28) then move or turn (Pluck it out) your eyes AWAY from the object (woman) CAUSING you to lust (sin), the same is true for the hand.

Jesus is NOT SAYING to literaly Pluck your eye out or Cut your hand off.

The simple application that Jesus was making is that It would be better for you to be saved and go to heaven with only one eye or one hand then to have both eyes or hands and GO TO HELL WHEN YOU DIED that would be the GREATEST of all tragedies.

The MOST IMPORTANT thing to know IS Jesus Christ as savior, just simply believe that Jesus Christ went to the cross and DIED and shed his blood, was BURIED and three days later RESURRECTED from the dead to pay for your sins.

-Christ DIED for you – Romans 5:8

-Christ PAID your sins in full – 2 Corinthians 5:21,1 Peter 2:24

-BELIEVE (Trust In Completely) in Christ ALONE as the complete payment of sin for salvation – John 3:16, Acts 16:31, Ephesians 2:8,9

“For the wages(payment) of sin is death (eternal torment in hell); but the GIFT(salvation) of God is eternal life THROUGH Jesus Christ our Lord”. Romans 6:23

IT IS THAT SIMPLE – THE GOSPEL TRUTH
