Question 267

By: Robert Serreyn

Question? Was there a curse placed on the line of descendants of King David?

Answer: YES there is…

In the Book of Matthew, we have the recorded genealogy that gives Christ the LEGAL RIGHT to set upon the Throne Of David.

Matthew 1:1-16 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. (2) Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren; (3) And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram; (4) And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon; (5) And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; (6) And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias; (7) And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa; (8) And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias; (9) And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias; (10) And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias; (11) And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon: (12) And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel; (13) And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor; (14) And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud; (15) And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob; (16) And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

In 2 Samuel 7:8-17 and Psalm 89:3,4, we have the Davidic Covenant given.

Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel: (9) And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth. (10) Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime, (11) And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house. (12) And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. (13) He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. (14) I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men: (15) But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. (16) And thine (David’s) house and thy kingdom (David’s) shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne (David’s) shall be established for ever .(17) According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

“I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant, (V.3) Thy seed (David’s) will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne (David’s) to all generations. Selah.” (Psalm 89:3-4)

Scripture tells us that a curse was placed upon the line of Coniah;
which is given in Jeremiah 22:28-30.

“Is this man Coniah a despised broken idol? is he a vessel wherein is no pleasure? wherefore are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they know not? (V.28)

O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the Lord. (V.29

Thus saith the Lord, Write ye this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days: FOR NO MAN OF HIS SEED SHALL PROSPER, SITTING UPON THE THRONE OF DAVID, AND RULING ANYMORE IN JUDAH.” (V.30)

BECAUSE OF this curse No one through this line could inherit the throne. Coniah is also called Jeconiah. He was the next-to-last king of Judah, and reigned in Jerusalem 3 months and 10 days.

(2 Chronicles 36:9) Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.

In the Book of Luke we have the recorded genealogy of Christ that gives him the BLOOD RIGHT to set upon the Throne of David which also BYPASSES THE CURSE that was placed upon King Davids line of descendants.

Luke 3:23-38 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli, (24) Which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Janna, which was the son of Joseph, (25) Which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Amos, which was the son of Naum, which was the son of Esli, which was the son of Nagge, (26) Which was the son of Maath, which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Semei, which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Juda, (27) Which was the son of Joanna, which was the son of Rhesa, which was the son of Zorobabel, which was the son of Salathiel, which was the son of Neri, (28) Which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Addi, which was the son of Cosam, which was the son of Elmodam, which was the son of Er, (29) Which was the son of Jose, which was the son of Eliezer, which was the son of Jorim, which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, (30) Which was the son of Simeon, which was the son of Juda, which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Jonan, which was the son of Eliakim, (31) Which was the son of Melea, which was the son of Menan, which was the son of Mattatha, which was the son of Nathan, which was the son of David, (32) Which was the son of Jesse, which was the son of Obed, which was the son of Booz, which was the son of Salmon, which was the son of Naasson, (33) Which was the son of Aminadab, which was the son of Aram, which was the son of Esrom, which was the son of Phares, which was the son of Juda, (34) Which was the son of Jacob, which was the son of Isaac, which was the son of Abraham, which was the son of Thara, which was the son of Nachor, (35) Which was the son of Saruch, which was the son of Ragau, which was the son of Phalec, which was the son of Heber, which was the son of Sala, (36) Which was the son of Cainan, which was the son of Arphaxad, which was the son of Sem, which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech, (37) Which was the son of Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan, (38) Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.

Now, if God did not set up David’s throne forever, then He has broken the Covenant and His Word would not be true. Satan would then have defeated God.

1 Chronicles 3:5 tells us,

“And these were born unto him (David) in Jerusalem; Shimea, and Shobab, and NATHAN, and Solomon, four, of Bathshua the daughter of Ammiel:”

Notice that Nathan was an older son of David; therefore, having the rights to the throne. If Christ had been the natural son of Joseph, who descended from Jeconiah, he could never sit upon the throne reigning as king, because of the curse. However, Christ came through Mary’s line, and Nathan’s; giving Christ the legal right to inherit the throne as the adopted son of Joseph. He, therefore, bypassed the curse recorded in Jeremiah Chp. 22.

In Genesis 3:15, Christ was prophesied to be born of the “Seed of the Woman,” which was Mary.

“And I will put enmity between thee (Satan) and the woman (Mary), and between thy seed (Satan) and her seed (Christ); it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”

In the sight of the Law, Jesus was a son of Joseph. Jesus had legal rights to the Throne of David through Joseph; but, not the rights of blood kin upon which the curse stood. His blood rights came through Mary, Nathan, and David. Jesus was the only one that could be of the family of Solomon, legally; and then, not be of the same by blood.

In Conclusion:

No one but the Lord Jesus Christ could ever fulfill all of these prophecies. God has given us an overwhelming amount of evidence; so that no one is with an excuse. What an assurance to support our faith that Christ is the Messiah and Savior.

The MOST IMPORTANT thing to know IS Jesus Christ as savior, just simply believe that Jesus Christ went to the cross and DIED and shed his blood, was BURIED and three days later RESURRECTED from the dead to pay for your sins.

-Christ DIED for you – Romans 5:8

-Christ PAID your sins in full – 2 Corinthians 5:21,1 Peter 2:24

-BELIEVE (Trust In Completely) in Christ ALONE as the complete payment of sin for salvation – John 3:16, Acts 16:31, Ephesians 2:8,9

“For the wages(payment) of sin is death (eternal torment in hell, but the GIFT(salvation) of God is eternal life THROUGH Jesus Christ our Lord”. Romans 6:23

IT IS THAT SIMPLE – THE GOSPEL TRUTH
