Question 285

By: Robert Serreyn

Question? How could God say that King David was a man after his own heart, when he committed adultery and murder?

Answer:

King David was “A Man after God’s own Heart” in the sense that King David had a desire to serve and to do what was Right in the eyes of the Lord”

1 Kings 3:14 says…

And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days.

1 Kings 3:14 was a guarantee of long life that the Lord had promised to Solomon (King David’s son) if he did as his father David had done.

King David, who just like us, was a sinner who committed sinful acts and NOTABLY his sin of Adultery with Bathsheba, and the Murder of her husband Uriah.

2 Samuel 11:2-5 And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. (3) And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? (4) And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house. (5) And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

2 Samuel 11:14-17 And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. (15) And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die. (16) And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant men were. (17) And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

King David PAID A HEAVY PRICE for those sins and God punished David by…

1. Taking the Life of his Son – 2 Samuel 12:9-19

2. And pronoucing that there would be NO PEACE within his house – 2 Samuel 12:11

and this COULD BE TRUE of any christian today if they…

– Ignore God’s Word.

– Refuse to do or obey God’s Will.

Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

What God meant by that he was looking for “A Man after his own Heart” – 1 Samuel 13:14, is in the sense of (although not perfect or without sin) a Man, and a King that God could trust to obey his Will and Word and to be used for his purpose. A practical application of this can be applied to us today, God is LOOKING FOR CHRISTIANS that will BE FAITHFUL who will allow themselves to be used by the Lord for his purpose.

But now thy (King Saul’s) kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.

1 Corinthians 4:2 Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.

In Conclusion:

God NOT ONLY sees our outward acts, he also knows our MOTIVES and THOUGHTS behind those acts, in other words you can trick man but you CANNOT fool God.

1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked (fooled, or tricked): for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

The MOST IMPORTANT thing to know IS Jesus Christ as savior, just simply believe that Jesus Christ went to the cross and DIED and shed his blood, was BURIED and three days later RESURRECTED from the dead to pay for your sins.

-Christ DIED for you – Romans 5:8

-Christ PAID your sins in full – 2 Corinthians 5:21,1 Peter 2:24

-BELIEVE (Trust In Completely) in Christ ALONE as the complete payment of sin for salvation – John 3:16, Acts 16:31, Ephesians 2:8,9

“For the wages(payment) of sin is death (eternal torment in hell); but the GIFT(salvation) of God is eternal life THROUGH Jesus Christ our Lord”. Romans 6:23

IT IS THAT SIMPLE – THE GOSPEL TRUTH
