Question 113

By: Robert Serreyn

Question? In Matthew 11:28, & 29 what do the two rest signify?

(Matthew 11:28,29) Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (29) Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

Answer:

V28 – Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28 “I WILL GIVE YOU REST” is referring to SALVATION, The phrase ” COME UNTO ME” means TRUST in Christ ALONE for salvation. A GOOD cross reference is John 14:6 that says:

(John 14:6) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

After TRUSTIN IN CHRIST ALONE for salvation the bible states in Romans 5:1

(Romans 5:1) Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

In V28 the Labor and Heavy Burden is in reference to our Sinful, Lost condition.

Labour – Greek KOPIAO= To Work.

Application: in the sense of, in TRYING to work for or add works to salvation.

Heavy Laden – Greek PHORTIZO= To Load up or Overburden

Application: In the sense of, in trying to work for or add works to salvation we Load Up or Overburden ourselves with an IMPOSSIABLE situation biblicaly by trying to gain heaven by OUR OWN merits and deeds.

(Titus 3:5)  Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.

(Romans 5:6-8) For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. (7) For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. (8) But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

V29 – Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

In Matthew 11:29 “REST UNTO YOUR SOULS” is referring to OUR SERVICE for Christ
.
NOTICE the phrase ” TAKE MY YOKE UPON YOU” the word YOKE is the Greek word ZUGOS which means servitude and carries the meaning of service or work.

Question? What work or service WOULD Christ would WANT us to do?

Answer: Share the GOSPEL to the world.

(Mark 16:15) And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

The MOST IMPORTANT thing to know IS Jesus Christ as savior, just simply believe that Jesus Christ went to the cross and DIED and shed his blood, was BURIED and three days later RESURRECTED from the dead to pay for your sins. the MOMENT you believe(TRUST in Christ ALONE) you recieve eternal life.

-Christ DIED for you – Romans 5:8

-Christ PAID your sins in full – 2 Corinthians 5:21,1 Peter 2:24

-BELIEVE (Trust In Completely) in Christ ALONE as the complete payment of sin for salvation – John 3:16, Acts 16:31, Ephesians 2:8,9

“For the wages(payment) of sin is death (eternal torment in hell); but the GIFT(salvation) of God is eternal life THROUGH Jesus Christ our Lord”. Romans 6:23

IT IS THAT SIMPLE – THE GOSPEL TRUTH
