Question? Can you explain Hebrews 10:26-31?
(Hebrews 10:26 – 31) For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, (27) But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. (28) He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: (29) Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? (30) For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.(31) It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Hebrews 10:26 – 31 can be applied as follows:
If We = The Apostle Paul is addressing the Jewish people in general.
If THEY (Jewish people) or a person REJECTS the Gospel (sin willfully), then there is NO MORE sacrifice for sins.
In other words they have rejected the ONLY WAY to be saved.
If the Death Burial and Resurrection of Christ is NOT GOOD ENOUGH, then NOTHING ELSE is adequate to pay for our sins.
– But a Certain Fearful: Lost person
– looking for of Judgment and Fiery Indignation:
it is a reference to the Judgement of hell and the Great White Throne Judgment.
The lost person has nothing but this to forward to BECAUSE they rejected the Gospel and Christ as their saviour.
– Which shall devour the Adversaries:
Those WHO have REJECTED Christ and his Gospel are his enemies (Adversaries) all of them SHALL BE cast into hell and the Lake of Fire.
V28: Under the Old Testament Law there was NO SACRIFICE for deliberate and willfull sin Those that despised the Law of Moses and broke it were EXECUTED.
(Exodus 21:12-14) He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death. (13) And if a man lie not in wait, but God deliver him into his hand; then I will appoint thee a place whither he shall flee. (14) But if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die.
(Numbers 15:30) But the soul that doeth ought presumptuously, whether he be born in the land, or a stranger, the same reproacheth the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
(Deuteronomy 17:2-7) If there be found among you, within any of thy gates which the LORD thy God giveth thee, man or woman, that hath wrought wickedness in the sight of the LORD thy God, in transgressing his covenant,
(3) And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded;
(4) And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and enquired diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel: (5) Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, which have committed that wicked thing, unto thy gates, even that man or that woman, and shalt stone them with stones, till they die. (6) At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death.(7) The hands of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people. So thou shalt put the evil away from among you.
Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy:
In other words could you think of a MORE FITTING punishment for the crime mentioned in V28.
Who hath trodden under foot the Son of God:
thought they could do as they pleased without consequence (Trodden Underfoot the Son of God).
hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing:
Depised and Rejected Christ (he was sanctified, an unholy thing)
Counted the blood of the covenant:
Counted = UNDERSTOOD
The blood of the covenant = Death, Burial, and Resurrection
hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace:
They Rejected Christ DESPITE the CONVICTION by the Holy Spirit (Spirit of Grace) needing salvation.
V30: For the Lost Usaved person, HELL for eternity and they will stand before God as their Judge.
(Matthew 7:21-23) Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. (22) Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? (23) And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
(Revelation 20:11-15) And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. (12) And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. (13) And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. (14) And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. (15) And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
For the SAVED the Corrective Hand Of God and maybe an early death for REFUSAL to be obediant to God.
(Hebrews 12:5) And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:(6) For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
(Ephesians 4:30) And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
– For the LOST the JUDGEMENT of God in hell for REJECTING Christ as saviour.
(2 Thessalonians 1:8) In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The MOST IMPORTANT thing to know IS Jesus Christ as savior, just simply believe that Jesus Christ went to the cross and DIED and shed his blood, was BURIED and three days later RESURRECTED from the dead to pay for your sins.
-Christ DIED for you – Romans 5:8
-Christ PAID your sins in full – 2 Corinthians 5:21,1 Peter 2:24
-BELIEVE (Trust In Completely) in Christ ALONE as the complete payment of sin for salvation – John 3:16, Acts 16:31, Ephesians 2:8,9
“For the wages(payment) of sin is death (eternal torment in hell); but the GIFT(salvation) of God is eternal life THROUGH Jesus Christ our Lord”. Romans 6:23
IT IS THAT SIMPLE – THE GOSPEL TRUTH
