Question 381

By: Robert Serreyn

Question? What was Jesus really getting at in Matthew 6:6?

Matthew 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Answer:

To answer this one let me start with an illustration.

In the old days there used to be phone booths located in several different places in a town or city and depending on the size of that town or city determined how many there were.

These phone booths had a light in them, so in order to “Turn On The Light” a person had to close (shut) the door and I believe this illustration can be directly applied to the above asked question.

The Lord was simply making a simple application to the fact that when we go to him in prayer “WE NEED” to block out ( or enter into thy closet) our busy world (Shut the door) as we go to him (IE. – Turn on the Light) to obtain the Light of his Wisdom.

Scripture states…

1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

As the last part of James 4:2 states…

Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

How many of us ARE GUILTY of this and then “Blame the Lord” when things don’t go as planned. or as James says in 4:3…

James 4:3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

IN CONCLUSION:

I wonder HOW MANY christians go without answered prayers BECAUSE they fail to go to the Lord in prayer or ask the Lord for something that they know that is not according to his will.

Prayer is the christian’s GREATEST and most UN – USED weapon that we have that is ONLY SECOND to the Word of God.

Sad to say, for MOST CHRISTIAN’S their prayer life is like their bibles dusty and not often used.

The MOST IMPORTANT thing to know IS Jesus Christ as savior, just simply believe that Jesus Christ went to the cross and DIED and shed his blood, was BURIED and three days later RESURRECTED from the dead to pay for your sins.

-Christ DIED for you – Romans 5:8

-Christ PAID your sins in full – 2 Corinthians 5:21,1 Peter 2:24

-BELIEVE (Trust In Completely) in Christ ALONE as the complete payment of sin for salvation – John 3:16, Acts 16:31, Ephesians 2:8,9

“For the wages(payment) of sin is death (eternal torment in hell); but the GIFT(salvation) of God is eternal life THROUGH Jesus Christ our Lord”. Romans 6:23

IT IS THAT SIMPLE – THE GOSPEL TRUTH
