QUESTION? Why did Jesus tell Peter to “get behind me satan”?
Answer:
The phrase you are refering to is found in Matthew 16:23 –
“But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men”.
The context of this verse is found in verse 21 where Jesus spoke of his capture, torture, and crucifixtion.
in V 22 – Peter by his human finite wisdom could NOT believe what Christ told them what was going to happen. Peter THOUGHT, that through STRONG reasoning he could instill some common sense in the Lord Jesus and somehow persuade him not to think this was in anyway true or will happen.
What Peter FAILED to realize BECAUSE of his human finite wisdom that by trying to convince the Lord Jesus to not allow the things he spoken of to happen was ACTUALLY doing what satan wanted.
The whole PURPOSE of the Lord Jesus for leaving his heavenly kingdom and coming to this earth was to DIE.
(1 John 2:2) And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
(Romans 5:8) But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Therefore when Peter rebuked the Lord for telling them that he (Jesus) MUST BE captured, falsley accused, mocked, tortured, and be crucified, Peter unknowningly was being used by satan and his demons to try to complete their evil plan of PREVENTING Christ from going to the cross.
So this is the reason why Christ told Peter “GET THEE BEHIND ME, SATAN”.
Satan, beginning at the Garden of Eden, had been trying to STOP Christ from being born, so that he(Jesus) couldn’t die and shed his blood on the cross as the complete payment for mankind’s sins.
Satan’s whole attitude is “as long he is going to the lake of fire to be tormented for eternity, he is going to take as many people he can with him”.Matthew 25:41, Revelation 20:10
(Matthew 25:41) Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
(Revelation 20:10) And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
The MOST IMPORTANT thing to know IS Jesus Christ as savior, just simply believe that Jesus Christ went to the cross and DIED and shed his blood, was BURIED and three days later RESURRECTED from the dead to pay for your sins.
A. Christ DIED for you – Romans 5:8
B. Christ PAID your sins in full – 2 Corinthians 5:21,1 Peter 2:24
C. BELIEVE (Trust In Completely) in Christ ALONE as the complete payment of sin for salvation – John 3:16, Acts 16:31, Ephesians 2:8,9
“For the wages(payment) of sin is death (eternal torment in hell & the lake of fire); but the GIFT of God is eternal life THROUGH Jesus Christ our Lord”. Romans 6:23
IT IS THAT SIMPLE – THE GOSPEL TRUTH
